M. JÜRGENSEN GmbH & Co. KG

A special attachment from KAUP for transporting input materials in a difficult operating environment at M. Jürgensen GmbH & Co. KG.

Special system at the melting furnace

In the company's own foundry, M. Jürgensen GmbH & Co KG (MJ) produces individual iron alloys in small induction furnaces that are precisely matched to customer requirements. A certain raw material (so-called recycled material in the form of iron filings) is stored in so-called hoppers. They must be fetched from there with oversized buckets and poured into the melting furnaces. Not really much, but always enough for a molten mass.

The still liquid molten mass is then fed into so-called centrifugal casting machines. The centrifugal force there produces cast blanks. The results are homogeneous hollow bodies with a particularly fine micro structure and significantly better values in the essential mechanical-technological characteristics in comparison with conventional gravity casting. These special product characteristics enable a wide variety of applications, such as liners for large diesel and gas engines in power stations and ships.

Attachment directly at the melting furnace

MJ has already been using an attachment from KAUP for several years - a standard tipping carriage. In the past, the company adapted the device to its very individual needs in its own metalworking shop. It provided the tipping carriage with a guard plate and a retaining lug. In the course of a new acquisition, Jürgensen wanted to go a different way and commissioned KAUP to develop a system for holding the buckets and the safe pouring of the metal chips as well as the internal transport of the cast blanks. This is because the cooled blanks must be taken for further processing at the end of the casting process, usually using the fork tines.

The result is a completely individual attachment for MJ. A KAUP tipping carriage with a tilting angle of 60° to the front is still used as a basis. For the very tough use in dirty environments, however, the attachment is equipped so that its heart - the retaining claw for the oversized buckets - is particularly protected. Therefore the device is completely reinforced and has individual sheet metal sheathing. The "tubing" of the hydraulics as well as the mechanics for controlling the holding claw are installed behind this and protected against high heat on the melting furnace and dust. If the holding claw is not needed, it can be easily folded in. Then two forks, which always remain attached to the fork carriage, are available for internal transport of the liners.

Client:

M. Jürgensen GmbH & Co KG is a worldwide leading manufacturer of grey cast iron cylinder liners for medium-speed four-stroke engines. Central applications of these liners are drive and auxiliary units for commercial and passenger shipping, large diesel and gas engines in power stations and diesel engines for locomotives. The company founded in 1937 has been part of Kuhn Industrie Holding since 2017.
